1995年日本公開のリュック・ベッソン監督作品。
ジャン・レノ主演で映画「ニキータ」のスピンオフ的作品。
世界的に大ヒットしてナタリー・ポートマンの出世作となった。
A work directed by Luc Besson released in Japan in 1995. A spin-off of the movie "Nikita" starring Jean Reno. It was a huge hit worldwide and became Natalie Portman's success story.
ざっくりあらすじ Rough synopsis
「掃除屋」と呼ばれるプロの殺し屋レオン。
ある日隣室に住むジョセフが麻薬を横領し、それがバレてその娘マチルダを残し皆殺しになってしまう。
レオンはとっさにマチルダを自室に保護し、やり過ごす。
マチルダは弟の仇を討ちたいとレオンに暗殺技術の指南を希望。
レオンは躊躇うもマチルダに手解きすることにした。
いつしか2人の間に奇妙な愛情が芽生えていった。

リュック・ベッソン監督が少年時代に構想していたSF作品「フィフス・エレメント」を映画化したかったが、予算が足りず撮影できずにいました。
そこで別の作品を撮って、その利益を「フィフス・エレメント」にあてようということになりました
そのため、「ニキータ」の設定を流用して「掃除屋」と呼ばれる殺し屋をメインにする物語を考案。
たった二日で脚本を仕上げたそうです。
I wanted to make a movie of the science fiction work "Fifth Element" that director Luc Besson envisioned when he was a boy, but he couldn't shoot because of lack of budget. So I decided to take another work and use the profits for the "Fifth Element". Therefore, he devised a story that diverted the setting of "Nikita" and focused on a hitman called "cleaner". It seems that the script was completed in just two days.

この映画は世界的に大ヒットし、名作とまで言われるほどになりました。
リュック・ベッソン監督はそこまでヒットすることは全く予想していませんでした。
すべての撮影をたったの3か月で終えての公開と非常に短期間で製作された、実は「とりあえず」の作品だったのが信じられません。
大ヒットのおかげで十分な資金が集まり、「フィフス・エレメント」の撮影を開始することができました。
This movie was a huge hit worldwide and became a masterpiece. Luc Besson never expected to hit that much. It's hard to believe that it was actually a "temporary" work that was released in just three months and produced in a very short period of time. Thanks to the big hit, we got enough money to start shooting "Fifth Element".
非常にシンプル Very simple
今作中に登場するキャラクターは
- レオン：殺し屋、背が高くて牛乳マニア
- マチルダ：家庭環境が悪く、家族を皆殺しにされてしまった少女
- スタンフィールド：悪徳麻薬取締官
という非常にシンプルでわかりやすいキャラクターです。
脚本的にも、レオンとマチルダの結びつきが強くなっていく描写と、最後レオンの死を盛り上げるためにスタンフィールドが強烈な悪であるという描写があるだけ。
分かりやすく、シンプルなストーリーです。
そして、テーマは
- 純粋な愛情
- 背徳感
以上のふたつです。
実はこの映画の肝は、「背徳感」にあると言っても過言ではありません。

この全編を通して感じられる背徳感の元になっているのがマチルダという12歳の美少女です。

などなど、マチルダが「12歳の美少女」であるからこそ背徳感を感じる部分が大きくなります。
もしマチルダが20歳を超える大人であったならば、この背徳感はほとんど感じない作品になっていたでしょう。
この背徳感が作品としての格をあげる要因になっているのでないかと思います。

ナタリー・ポートマンの悩み Natalie Portman’s worries
世界的に大ヒットし、ナタリー・ポートマンもブレイクしました。
そもそも、マチルダ役はかなり選ぶのに苦労したみたいです。
リュック・ベッソン監督のイメージとしては少女だったのですが、オーディションに集まった女優はみな大人の女の演技を見せたのだそうです。
そこでイメージとは全く違ったのですが、ナタリー・ポートマンを起用することになったのだそう。
まだ女優としてデビューしたばかりの彼女は自由に涙を流す演技は出来なかったので、目の下のミントオイルを塗って涙を流した演技をこなしたそうです。
しかし撮影時、12、3歳で初々しい彼女が愛の言葉を交わすような刺激の強いシーンを演じたことで、一部に子供なのに性的対象として見られてしまいます。
彼女はこのことを不快に感じていたとその後成人してからインタビューに答えています。

ぶっ飛んだ演技に人間の怖さを生々しく感じさせられます。
実はほとんどがアドリブだったそうで、周囲の俳優たちの本物のとまどった表情が使われています。

なかなか強烈な印象だったのが、ジャン・レノ扮するレオンが毎日、牛乳を大量に飲んでいます。
これは代々、殺し屋の血族として生きてきたレオンの身体能力や集中力などを高い水準で維持するための生活習慣なんですが。
「殺す」のに健康が第一というなんだか皮肉が効いた習慣です。
「ハイサワー」のグラスが登場するのもなんだかニヤリとしてしまいます。

監督が気に入った同じ俳優を何度も自分の映画に起用することはよくあることですが、今作の主人公レオン役についてジャン・レノは「今回は起用されることはないだろう」と思っていました。
なぜならロバート・デ・ニーロ、アル・パチーノ、メル・ギブソンなどとんでもないビッグネームが並んでいたからです。
しかし、ある日監督との夕食の時に「私からのプレゼントだよ、レオン！」と「レオン」の脚本を渡されて、ジャン・レノは涙を流して感激したそうです。

この映画はアメリカでテスト上映した際にレオンとマチルダの微妙な関係に不快感を表す人々がいたために、出来るだけシーンをカットして上映されたました。
それでも一部の評論家たちからは「児童ポルノに等しい」と酷評されてしまいます。
実際、そういう目で見た観客がいて、ナタリー・ポートマンを悩ませるようなこともありました。
リュック・ベッソン監督は「純粋な愛」を描いたものであり「肉体関係」を描いているわけではないと強く反論しました。
そしてその後、カットされた22分の映像をまた追加して「完全版」として公開しました。
The film was screened as cut as possible because some people were uncomfortable with the subtle relationship between Leon and Mathilda when it was test-screened in the United States. Still, some critics criticize it as "equivalent to child pornography." In fact, there was an audience who saw it that way, and it sometimes bothered Natalie Portman.
